During the Middle Ages in Europe, woodcarvers and stonemasons decorated Churches with all kinds of monsters. They carved the monsters in wood and stone - devils with horns, snakes swallowing their own tails, the creatures of the zodiac and all manner of strange beasts conjured up by their imagination. These carvings had a purpose. They reminded people of what would happen to them after death if they led sinful lives. They would go to Hell and be tormented by the fiends and demons that they saw around them. If they led good lives then they would go to Heaven and live with the saints who were also carved here.
